Slow and quiet or fast and thrilling? How the two safaris differ, and why most of Saim’s guests end up doing both.

Two ways to see the dunes

At Sam Sand Dunes you can go out on a camel or in an open jeep. Both take you into the same landscape, but they feel completely different. One is slow and quiet; the other covers ground quickly and is more of a ride.

Saim’s four listed packages include both, so most guests do not have to choose. If you are planning a custom trip, this guide helps you decide.

The camel safari

A camel safari moves at walking pace. You sit high, the dunes roll past slowly and you can hear the wind and the camel’s steps. It is the more traditional way to see the desert, and it is timed well for the late-afternoon light and sunset.

Getting on and off takes a moment to get used to, because the camel rises back legs first. Camel handlers guide the animals throughout.

  • Best for: first-time visitors, photographers, families with older children
  • Pace: slow and steady
  • Feel: calm, traditional, close to the landscape

The jeep safari

A jeep safari is fast. Drivers take open vehicles up and down the dunes, which can be thrilling. You cover more distance in less time and reach parts of the dunes a camel would take much longer to reach.

It can be bumpy. Guests with back problems, pregnant guests or anyone uncomfortable with sudden movement should mention this so the ride can be adjusted or skipped.

  • Best for: groups, younger travellers, anyone who enjoys a thrill
  • Pace: fast
  • Feel: energetic, more ground covered

Why most guests do both

A common pattern is a jeep safari first, to get a sense of the dunes, followed by a camel ride out to watch the sunset. The two complement each other: one for excitement, one for the quiet moment the desert is known for.

Practical tips

Whichever you choose:

  • Wear closed shoes; sand gets hot
  • Cover your head and carry sunglasses
  • Keep phones in a zipped pocket on the jeep
  • Ask before photographing camel handlers
  • Tell Saim about any health concerns in advance

Safaris in Saim’s packages

All four packages include jeep and camel safaris. The 5-day group experience also includes a camel safari in a quieter desert area before the open desert night.
