A long, rewarding day toward the border: the temple, the war museum and what to know about border-area permissions.
The road toward the border
Tanot and Longewala lie northwest of Jaisalmer, toward the India–Pakistan border. The drive is long, through open desert with few towns, so this is a full-day trip. Leave early and plan to be back in Jaisalmer by evening.
Saim includes this route as the third day in his 3-day packages and as day three of the 5-day group experience.
Tanot Mata Temple
Tanot Mata Temple is deeply revered in the region. It is closely associated with the 1965 and 1971 wars, and local accounts describe the temple and its surroundings being spared during shelling. The temple is looked after by the Border Security Force, and a small display recalls that history.
Dress modestly and follow the guidance of those in charge of the temple.
Longewala War Museum
Longewala was the site of a well-known battle in 1971. Today there is a war memorial and museum with tanks, vehicles and exhibits from the period. Many Indian visitors know the story from films and come specifically to see it.
Visiting the border: what to know
A visit to the border area beyond Tanot is sometimes possible, but it requires applicable permission and is subject to restrictions set by the authorities. Rules can change, and access can be restricted on particular days. Treat it as a conditional part of the itinerary rather than a guaranteed stop.
Carry valid photo ID. Saim will tell you what is required for your dates when you enquire; check current rules locally before relying on any specific procedure.
- Carry original photo ID for every guest
- Follow instructions at checkpoints
- Do not photograph where it is not allowed
- Accept that access may change on the day
Ranau and village life
Ranau Village, on the route, offers a brief look at life in the desert: houses, livestock and the rhythm of a place far from the city. In the 5-day group experience, the Ranau desert experience is part of the border day.
Planning the day
The day involves many hours in the vehicle. Bring water, snacks, sun protection and a light layer for air-conditioning or evening. Facilities on the route are limited, so plan stops with your driver.
